Israeli strike reportedly kills Hezbollah spokesman as group prepares response to new ceasefire proposal

The spokesman for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Mohammed Afif, was killed in an Israeli attack in Beirut on Sunday.

Lebanese security sources told Reuters he was killed in the strike in central Lebanon’s capital. CNN has yet to confirm the news, although Hezbollah’s press office accepted condolences in a likely sign that Afif had been killed.

The attack was only the fourth Israeli attack inside Beirut since 2006, when a Armed conflict for 34 days between Israel and Hezbollah took place.

Sunday’s strike hit the area, known as Ras al-Nebaa, in the middle of the day, with no evacuation warning issued. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not comment on the attack.

For years, Afif ran Hezbollah’s media relations. After the assassination of the Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in late September, Afif was a prominent public face of the party, giving speeches at press conferences amid the rubble of Beirut’s southern suburbs, which have been hit by attacks since Israel began a new offensive on October 1.

Israel’s apparent targeting of Afif comes amid an escalation of its offensive in Lebanon, alongside stepped-up diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel.

Hezbollah is currently reviewing a US-Israeli proposal presented to the Lebanese government on Thursday, according to CNN sources familiar with the negotiations. It is unclear whether Afif’s reported killing will impact the negotiations.

Israel’s war on many fronts

Meanwhile, at least 50 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza on Sunday morning, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Dozens of Palestinians displaced by the ongoing Israeli operation in the nearby Jabalya area were sheltering in two of the houses hit, a local journalist said.

“We were sitting at home and suddenly we heard intense strikes, because of this we could not leave the house,” an eyewitness, who is also a resident of the area, told CNN, without giving his name.

The resident said people in the area started pulling the dead from the rubble in the absence of civil defense and ambulances. Gaza’s civil defense says it cannot operate in the area because of continued Israeli attacks.

“These were displaced people from Jabalya to Beit Lahiya,” the eyewitness said.

A video of the aftermath seen by CNN shows panicked children, some crying in the background, as a man tells them to calm down and get out. A small child, covered in blood, is being held in someone’s arms.

Another small child can be heard in the background shouting: “mummy, mummy”.

Separately, Israeli strikes targeted al-Bureij in central Gaza, killing 23 people, according to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where the bodies were taken.

“It was a very scary night with the sounds of little children screaming – every little one calling for their mother,” said local resident Mahmoud Azaiza.

CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comment.

Israel launched a renewed military offensive on Jabalya last month after Israeli intelligence indicated that Hamas was trying to rebuild its capabilities in the area. The offensive displaced thousands of Palestinians and killed dozens.

The operation has caused losses to the Israeli army, with 20 soldiers said to have been killed in northern Gaza since the operation began, including four last week, according to statements released by the IDF since October 6.

“This operation to systematically dismantle the terrorist infrastructure in the area will continue as long as necessary to achieve its objectives,” the IDF said last month.

The ongoing offensive on Gaza coincides with Israel’s expanding operation in southern Lebanon. On Friday evening, Israeli forces reached the village of Chama, about 61 miles from the capital Beirut, in what is understood to be the deepest incursion into southern Lebanese territory.

Israeli forces withdrew after clashing with Hezbollah, Lebanese state media said.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continued to hit the Lebanese capital on Sunday for the sixth consecutive day. The IDF renewed evacuation warnings Sunday morning for residents of Haret Hreik in the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah is known to have a strong presence.

As Israel struck Lebanon this weekend, talks between political officials about a US ceasefire initiative continued in Beirut, a Lebanese official familiar with the talks told CNN late Saturday.

American officials made efforts to ceasefire agreement to avoid expanding Israel’s offensive into Lebanon, which has devastated parts of the country. Hezbollah is currently considering proposalsources told CNN this week.
