Newton man charged for allegedly threatening to shoot Hy-Vee employees – Newton Daily News

After learning his boyfriend had been banned from Hy-Vee, a 50-year-old Newton man allegedly became hostile with the manager and then threatened to shoot everyone at the store and the manager’s family, leading to to a confrontation with police officers and then being taken into custody.

According to complaints filed with the Jasper County Clerk’s Office, Severn P. Rodenberg was charged with terroristic threats, two counts of first-degree harassment and tampering with official records. Officers were first dispatched to Hy-Vee at 7:44 p.m. Nov. 10 in reference to threats made by phone.

Witnesses told police a woman was barred from their store. As she left the store, a man called and asked why she was banned. The store manager said he was not allowed to discuss this information with him, but the man asked to speak to a human resources representative.

When Hy-Vee refused, the man told the manager, “You don’t want me to come to the store tonight.” Then he said, “I’m going to come over there and shoot everybody there and then I’m going to go and shoot and kill your family too.” Officers spoke with Rodenberg at his home, where he said he was talking to someone at his store.

Rodenberg said the person he was really talking to was on his property without his permission and told them to get out or “he’s going to shoot him and his family.” But Rodenberg also acknowledged he was on the phone with Hy-Vee when he made the statement, suggesting his comments were not directed at the manager.

Newton Police Department officers advised Rodenberg that he was under arrest and to move away from a TV stand. Rodenberg said no and then ran into the kitchen as police told him to stop.

The Newton News does not have any information on what led to the woman being banned from the grocery store.
