MANHATTAN – Kansas football he hoped a week off would provide a fresh start. Instead, it was more same for wild cats.

Two weeks after suffering an upset loss at Houston, the Wildcats allowed Arizona State to jump out to a three-touchdown halftime lead as a late comeback effort fell short in a 24-14 loss in front of the team. Devils of the Sun on Saturday night at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

K-State rallied from a 24-0 deficit to score twice in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. The Wildcats outgained Arizona State 412 yards to 398, but that was the only highlight.

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns, with Jordyn Tyson catching 12 for 176 yards and two scores. Cam Skattebo rushed for 73 yards.

For K-State, Avery Johnson completed 24 of 40 passes for 258 yards, but was intercepted twice. DJ Giddens had a big second half to finish with 133 yards rushing.

The 19th-ranked Wildcats had the week off to recover from a 24-19 upset loss at Houston that snapped a four-game winning streak. Arizona State has won four of its last five games, including a 35-31 home win against Central Florida last week.

It was too little, too late for K-State as Arizona State wins it, 24-14.

For the second time tonight, a bad snap prevents a K-State field goal attempt. That would have made it a one-possession game.

K-State wins the third quarter but still trails 24-6 going into the fourth.

Kansas State finally got its running game going after the Arizona State turnover, driving 78 yards in six plays with Avery Johnson scoring from 10 yards out on a quarterback draw. DJ Giddens broke off runs of 27 and 19 yards on the drive.

After a failed two-point conversion, Arizona State still led 24-6 with 2:51 left in the third.

It came on the end of a 17-yard completion, but the Kansas State defense finally forced a turnover when Jordyn Tyson punted at the Wildcat 22-yard line with 5:15 left in the third quarter.

The fumble was forced by linebacker Austin Romaine and recovered by safety Jordan Riley.

The good news for K-State is that the defense kept Arizona State out of the end zone to start the second half. The bad news, Parker Lewis made a 47-yard field goal to extend the Sun Devils’ lead to 24-0 with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.

The drive covered 46 yards in seven plays.

After getting a touchdown called back, K-State gets to first and goal at the Arizona State 4, only to get blocked and then succeed on a short field goal attempt.

The Wildcats still trail 21-0 with 2:56 left in the half. At least they traveled 75 meters before the accident.

Kansas State couldn’t pick up a yard on two attempts, turning the ball over on downs at its own 47 when DJ Giddens is stopped for no gain.
