Dr. Desh TV in preventive detention for 2 days in case of attempted murder

A court in Dhaka today remanded Desh TV Managing Director Arif Hasan in two-day remand in a case filed for trying to kill Mr. Sajib in the airport area during the anti-discrimination student movement of 19 July.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mr Ziadur Rahman gave the order after the investigating officer Mr Abu Sayeed, a sub-inspector of the airport police station, produced him before him with a prayer of three days’ remand.

In the remand prayer, the IO said that the accused had avoided giving correct information about the case. So, he needs to know the whereabouts of accused named in the FIR and other fugitives responsible for committing such crimes.

While lawyer Syed Zaynal Abedin Meshbah filed an application seeking bail along with cancellation of preventive prayer on the ground that Arif was not present at the spot during the event. He was involved in the case just to harass him. Moreover, he is not involved in AL politics. So, he should be granted bail, the defense said.

According to the case statement, Mr. Sajib took part in the protest at the airport area around 5:00 pm on July 19. When their procession reached Uttara Scholastica School, the Awami League and its front organizations attacked the procession with guns leaving Sajib, and several others injured.

Soon after the incident, Sajib was rushed to Utrara Adhunik Hospital for treatment.

The victim’s father filed a case with the Airport Police Station against 26 people, including Arif, after his arrest.

Police arrested Arif from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport when he was trying to leave abroad last night, according to the police dispatch report presented to the court today.

Arif Hasan is the Managing Director of Desh TV and the General Secretary of the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO).

In 2020, another court in Dhaka ordered authorities to freeze 15 bank accounts of Arif Hasan and his firm “Hasan Telecom” due to suspicious transactions.
