Zelenskyy says the war will “end sooner” with Trump as US president

The Russian military launched what President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called “a massive combined attack” across the country on Sunday. In his post on X, the leader of Ukraine talked about 120 missiles and 90 drones launched in different regions of the country.

Two people were killed in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, following a drone attack. Six others were injured, including two children.

“The enemy’s target was our energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine. Unfortunately, the objects were damaged from impacts and falling debris,” Zelenskyy said.

Emergency power outages were reported in Kyiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions shortly after the strikes, private energy provider DTEK said on Telegram.

The attack comes as the war between Ukraine and Russia approaches the 1,000-day mark. Russian troops continue to make slow progress in apparent anticipation of US President-elect Donald Trump’s next move.

Earlier, Trump said he would end the war in Ukraine in one day. If it decides to cut military aid to Ukraine and push the parties to negotiations, Moscow could take advantage of the slow but steady gains its military has made recently.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s push for peace talks “is finding increasing acceptance among Ukraine’s European allies, who are increasingly concerned that time is not on Ukraine’s side in the war.”

The change seems to be recognized in Kyiv. Zelenskyy said he was confident the war with Russia would “end sooner” with Trump as US president.

“It is certain that the war will end sooner with the policies of the team that will now run the White House. This is their approach, their promise to their citizens,” Zelenskyi told Ukrainian news outlet Suspilne, adding that Ukraine “must do everything to end this war next year, end it through diplomatic means.”
