“We recognize that artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important tool for driving innovation, promoting sustainable economic growth and transforming various aspects of everyday life in our economies,” the statement said.

“We encourage economies to step up their efforts to advance digital transformation,” the document said. “We recognize the essential role of an enabling, open, fair, non-discriminatory, safer and more inclusive digital ecosystem that facilitates trade and the importance of increasing trust and security in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT).

Fossil fuel subsidies

Participants reaffirmed their commitments to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.

“We recall our commitment to rationalize and phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption,” the document said.

“We reiterate the need to further integrate actions to address environmental challenges, including climate change, extreme weather and natural disasters,” the statement added.

Economic integration

APEC countries and territories will continue to contribute to economic integration in the Asia-Pacific Region.

“We reaffirm our commitment to promote economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region in a manner that is market-led and in line with the Putrajaya 2040 APEC Vision,” the statement said.

In this regard, the participants endorsed the Ichma Declaration on a New Look for the Promotion of the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area.

Food security

The participants pledged to increase their efforts to ensure food security in the region, the statement said.

“We reaffirm our commitment to the APEC Roadmap for Food Security to 2030, focusing on strengthening regional food security and nutrition, contributing to the achievement of open, equitable, transparent, productive, sustainable, resilient, innovative and inclusive agri-food systems, acknowledging that it exists is not a universal approach,” the document states.

Leaders recognized that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to ensuring the sustainability of agriculture.

The APEC Leaders’ Meeting takes place in Lima, Peru on November 15-16. The Russian delegation is led by Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk.
