Mitchell Melton, Aaron Scott are out for Northwestern

CHICAGO — Ohio State running back Mitchell Melton and cornerback Aaron Scott are unavailable for Saturday’s game at Northwestern.

Both backups were among six scholarship players listed on the availability report Buckeyes sent to the Big Ten before kickoff at Wrigley Field.

Scott left in the fourth quarter of the last week’s win over Purdue with an unspecified injury. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day described it as day-to-day on Tuesday.

The issue with Melton, who rotated as a defensive end and a stand-up pass defender, was unclear. He saw a the hand of clips against the Boilermakers last week as the “jack,” the hybrid end-linebacker position.

Among the Buckeyes’ defensive reserves, Melton has played the third-most snaps this season behind Kenyatta Jackson and Caden Curry.

A fifth-year senior who overcame ACL injuries in 2022 and 2021, Melton totaled 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in eight games.

The unavailable list also includes tight end Will Kacmarek, left tackles Zen Michalski and Josh Simmons and cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt. All have been ruled out for at least a week.

Simmons injured his left knee in the Buckeyes’ loss to Oregon last month and it is out for the rest of the year as a result.

Kacmarek has also been sidelined since suffering an injury against the Ducks, though he remains in line to return. Day said after Wednesday’s practice that he was starting to participate in individual drills and that he was “ahead of schedule.”

It looked as if Kacmarek had suffered an upper body injury. His left arm was in a sling last month.
