Fritz stuns Zverev with incredible performance to reach ATP Finals final

Taylor Fritz will play in the final of the 2024 ATP Finals in Turin after defeating Alexander Zverev in the semi-final.

Both players deserved their place in the semi-finals at the 2024 ATP Finals in Turin, but Zverev shone more brightly in the three legs. He defeated all his opponents, including Carlos Alcaraz.

As a result, he entered the semi-finals as the top seed in his group, while the American player was the second player in his group behind Jannik Sinner, who will face Casper Ruud in the other semi-final.

Previously, Zverev and Fritz have met 11 times, with the American leading H2H 6-5. This year, Fritz has won three out of four matches they’ve played, but he still didn’t go into this match as a favorite given Zverev’s form at the event.

On top of that, he previously won the Paris Masters but couldn’t replicate that form in the first set of this match. Zverev’s forehand was far from consistent, while Fritz played out of this world.

The American rarely missed from this forehand and was the much better player. As a result of his work, he reached two break points in the sixth game and converted the second to lead 4-2.

Thanks to his perfect serve throughout the whole set, he held serve, easily winning the first set of the match 6-3 to take a big lead.

However, this did not come without a response. Zverev started the second set better, and at the start of the set, there was also a video review in action, which is rarely seen in tennis.

When Zverev followed up a short ball in the second game, umpire Adel Nour said “not up”, meaning the German had lost the point, which he probably would have lost regardless, as his opponent had an easy volley to the net.

Understandably, Zverev called for video review, which proved him right, and although his opponent had an easy volley at the net, the rally had to be restarted.

The match then continued without major problems, and already in the fourth game, he broke to lead 3-1 and confirmed with a hold to lead 4-1.

The world No. 2 then had to deal with a break point in the seventh game when he did not have his best game, but managed to save it and also serve out the set, winning 6-3, to force decisive.

There was very little between the two and they kept fighting for every ball. In the fifth game, Fritz got off to a terrible start on serve, falling behind 0-40, facing three straight break points.

He managed to erase that deficit, saving all three break points to lead 3-2 after the match. A few games later, when leading 4-3, he was the player who had three break points, but the American could not convert any.

That could only hurt him a few games later as he faced break points at 5-5, which was also a small match point for Zverev. The German player, however, could not use it, and as a result, the match was decided in the tie-break of the third set.

In the tie-break, Fritz served better and also managed to bait his opponent into making mistakes. He fought his way to match points and managed to convert the first, winning the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) to reach the final of the 2024 ATP Finals.

In the final, he will play against the winner of the match between Sinner and Ruud, with the Italian player heavily favored, especially against the hosts.
