The newlyweds are on their honeymoon cruise, but there’s just one problem

A young husband and wife were ready to jet off on their honeymoon, only to find that it wasn’t going to be as easy as for other married couples, due to their young age.

Savanna Stallings, 19, married her boyfriend of a year, Ty Walker, on Oct. 24 after they met while he was in her home state of Idaho playing junior hockey.

After the big day, they prepared to board their Royal Caribbean cruise from a stop in South Carolina and set off on the 30-hour drive after booking a hotel in Nebraska for an overnight stay.

But when they arrived at the hotel at midnight, they were “turned away because of (our) age, even when we offered to show our marriage license,” Stallings said. Newsweek.

“It was the middle of the night and we weren’t close to anyone we knew, we thought for a second we might be sleeping in the car.”

The couple tried four more hotels and were turned down at each, but finally the fifth allowed them to stay after calling both their parents.

The situation meant that Stallings and Walker were prepared that it would not be smooth sailing during their journey.

“Before going through security, you need to be able to access your pass. navigation, which we couldn’t because we couldn’t check in online with (the) everybody else because of our age,” Stallings said.

But unlike the nightmare situation in Nebraska, “we notified security of our situation, they allowed us to go through security and to the check-in desk, we just had to have our license and ID.”

Stallings shared a short clip of their boarding attempt for her TikTok account @savanna_stallings on November. It featured Walker submitting their various IDs and marriage certificates before being welcomed aboard.

Stallings wrote, “POV (point of view): You got married at 19 and 20, your honeymoon is a cruise, and you have to be 21 to get on the ship.” And she added in the caption: “The joys of being young and married.”

The video got a big reaction, garnering over 202,000 likes, with one viewer writing: “I really don’t understand why they don’t let under 21s unless you’re married like that!”

Others shared their own experiences, one user recalled getting married at 18 and 19, “and they didn’t realize that our hotel you have to be 21 to check in or rent a car”.

“I was married at 18. Hotels, cruises, car rentals, all made exceptions for married couples,” another viewer posted.

Royal Caribbean’s age policy, found on its website, states that no guest under the age of 21 will be allowed to sail unless accompanied by a person over the age of 21. However, this can be waived for active duty members and minor married couples as long as they can provide proof. However, minors will not be allowed to drink or be served alcohol.

During the cruise, the newlyweds were identified several times and were unable to participate in the ship’s excursions, Stallings said. Newsweek. But, she added, “we had a great time. We could do everything on the ship and enjoy the islands.”

Average age for first time marriages in the United States it is 28.6 for women and 30.5 for men, according to data from Statista. This is a significant difference from 1998, when the median age was 25 years for women and 26.7 years for men.

Stallings shared the clip on TikTok because she knows “being married so young is intriguing to others” and regularly uploads snapshots of her daily life to her channel.

Although there were negative comments, some accusatory the couple’s young marriage of being a “bad choice” or insisting the couple divorce, Stallings said it was “cool to see how many others had the same” experience, sharing their own stories of young marriage.

“We may be young, but we’ve put a lot of thought into this; we didn’t just randomly decide to get married one day,” Stallings said.

“We have our priorities straight, we’re happy, and the TikTok comments aren’t going to change that.”
