Duanesburg man involved in campaign sign theft | News

Michael Coleman, 59, was slapped with the misdemeanor charge at a Princetown police station.

State police spokeswoman Stephanie O’Neil said she could not provide further details about his arrest at this time.

“The investigation is still listed as ongoing, so I cannot release anything further,” O’Neil said in an email.

The charge comes after Schenectady County Republican Committee Chairman Thomas Kennedy alleged that Coleman stole signs at the corner of Herrick Road and Courtney Drive at least twice in early November. They included two signs for state Assembly candidate Joseph Mastroianni, a sign for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and an anti-Equal Rights Amendment sign.

Such allegations are based on hidden camera footage recorded near the intersection, Kennedy said. The device was attached to a tree in the 11th hour of the campaign season, after a month of signs disappearing at the same location, Kennedy said.

Night vision footage from the location obtained by the Daily Gazette Family of Newspapers shows an individual bending down and grabbing an object on the night of November 4. The next day, a person was caught leaning in a similar area holding a collective sign. endorsing Trump, Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance and US Senate candidate Michael Sapraicone.

The nighttime footage is difficult to decipher, while the daytime video shows an individual believed to resemble Coleman, Kennedy claimed after speaking with neighbors.

“It was our room and we were monitoring (the signs),” Kennedy claimed, referring to the Schenectady County Republican Committee. “I caught him and then the next day I caught him again.”

According to additional footage relayed to Kennedy from an alleged witness in the area, a woman says it’s “… very illegal to take down signs, actually” as a person is seen getting into a vehicle.

The Daily Gazette Family of Newspapers is withholding the identity of the alleged witness. She provided additional testimony to state police.

Coleman, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The investigation into Coleman remains being handled by the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office.

Sign theft has been a point of contention throughout this Capital Region presidential election cycle for candidates on both sides of the aisle.

“What happened was, prior to this, we lost hundreds of signs this year,” Kennedy said. “It was so bad when I was putting up the signs for election night, I’d come back two hours later – I was gone.”

This election season, Kennedy helped Mastrioianni, who allegedly stole mail from his opponent, Rep. Angelo Santabarbara, at a residence in Scotland in mid-October. Dashcam footage from that incident was released by the Schenectady County Democratic Committee.

Mastroianni, who ultimately lost to Santabarbara 62 percent of the vote to 37.8 percent, was charged by local police with petty theft after the election. He has resisted calls to resign from his position on the Rotterdam city council.
