A chance of isolated thunderstorms Saturday night, more active next week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – We can expect a great evening for any outdoor plans you may have; just keep a jacket handy as the temperatures drop.

Noisy fog overnight

Overnight, we see skies become partly cloudy as lows drop into the upper 30s and 40s. Heavy fog is possible late tonight and early tomorrow morning, so be sure to drive slowly and keep your low beam on if you encounter a fog bank while driving.

Partly cloudy Saturday, isolated showers or thunderstorms Saturday night

We stay dry through the first half of the weekend as highs on Saturday reach the mid-50s under partly cloudy skies. A cold front moves in Saturday evening and a shower or thunderstorm could develop as the front moves through.

Due to the lack of moisture ahead of the front, anything that develops will be very isolated in nature and many areas can be expected to remain dry. Any chance of showers or thunderstorms is gone before dawn on Sunday, but skies are turning mostly cloudy and staying that way through the second half of the weekend. Lows Saturday night are in the low to mid 40s.

Your first alert: Cloudy on Sunday, rain on Monday

Skies remain mostly cloudy Sunday, and an isolated shower is possible south of Interstate 30 Sunday afternoon as a storm system makes its way across the plains into the Midwest. We’re mostly dry by the end of the weekend, though, as highs reach the mid-50s again on Sunday. Lows drop into the 30s Sunday night as skies remain cloudy. The approaching storm system brings rain Monday morning that spreads across eastern Iowa from south to north. The rain stays with us all day Monday and into Monday evening. Highs on Monday reach the mid 50s and lows on Monday evening reach the mid 40s.

Your first alert: drier, still cold trend late next week

I mentioned this week that the forecast for next week will be complex and subject to change. Well, that’s exactly how things turned out. Our forecast has become drier for the second half of next week as the storm system that was originally forecast to linger over our area for several days is now expected to expand quite quickly. A few lingering showers are possible Tuesday morning, but these will taper off throughout the day. Highs on Tuesday reach the mid 50s and we’re dry Tuesday night as lows drop into the mid 30s. There’s a slight chance for a shower Wednesday and some rain or wet snow Wednesday night as cooler air begins to filter through.

Highs Wednesday will reach the mid 40s and lows Wednesday night will reach the low 30s. The rest of next week now looks dry as highs remain in the upper 40s and lows in the upper 20s and 30s. Continue to pay attention to the forecast for the second half of next week as there is still plenty of time for the forecast to continue to evolve and change. In the meantime, we’ll keep your Early Warning Forecast updated with the latest information through the weekend and into next week as active weather returns.

We can expect a quiet end to the working week and a mostly dry weekend ahead of rain next week.
