3 teenagers face charges after possible robbery, chase with deputies in Highlands Ranch

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KDVR) — Several Douglas County teenagers are facing charges stemming from reports of a possible robbery turned stalking.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a Walgreens near University and Quebec in Highlands Ranch on Monday evening. An employee reported that there were three men inside, all wearing black hoodies and black masks, and believed they were being robbed. DCSO did not immediately say whether or not the store was robbed.

Deputies then saw the three individuals wearing black hoodies and black face coverings exit the store. One was immediately arrested.

Deputies said another suspect ran into a neighborhood and began jumping fences in the yards of homes along Amherst Court, including the yard of resident Lucia Iturralde.

“We have cameras and the doorbell and it rang at about 10:45 and the cops were screaming, ‘Police! Police!’ I was sleeping, so I was like what’s going on, what’s going on?” Iturralde said. “The suspect is running around the yard, we’re watching our front cameras and the cops are screaming and we’re like, oh my God, they’ve got our house surrounded.”

Deputies could be heard on body camera videos released by the sheriff’s office and nearby surveillance video asking the suspect to stop running. Deputies said the suspect ignored their commands.

“That doesn’t happen here. I mean the biggest thrill we have is a bear or a raccoon,” Iturralde said. “Everyone talks about Highlands Ranch as quiet and peaceful, so to see all the action, we were like, woah!”

Deputies were eventually able to arrest the second suspect in the neighborhood. The third suspect was arrested a short time later, but it is unclear where.

“I actually broke into a car, that made us put cameras all in the front and back so we could watch the street, so it was handy for that, being able to see,” said Iturralde. “It’s helpful to have neighbors who talk to each other and check in so we’re good.”

DCSO said a 16-year-old suspect from Parker was taken to a local juvenile detention center where he was charged with obstruction, theft, trespassing and resisting arrest. A 16-year-old and a 14-year-old from Highlands Ranch were released to their parents pending theft charges.

“It’s sad that they’re so young, now you’re going to have trespassing charges, so it’s like everything just piled up,” Iturralde said.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement in a post on social media.

“Another great example of how serious we are #DCSO deputies are catching the criminals,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post. “A great show of determination from our deputies doing what they need to do to keep the Douglas County community safe.”
