UI fraternity under investigation for alleged wrongdoing

The University of Iowa’s Alpha Delta Phi chapter has been ordered to suspend all operations pending a tip-off investigation after police discovered several dozen blindfolded pledges in the basement of the fraternity house, leading to an arrest.

According to a news release, UI Police, Iowa City Police and the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a fire alarm Friday morning when they discovered the commitments in the basement.

One person, whose name has not been released, was arrested and charged with tampering with official documents. The release states that the person is not a UI student and does not live at the fraternity house.

The UI Office of Student Responsibility began an investigation into the incident and ordered the president of Alpha Delta Phi to suspend all fraternity operations.

The release also states that in light of the allegations, the national chapter of Alpha Delta Phi has suspended its charter until further notice. Alpha Delta Phi has more than 90 members with 20 new members as of spring 2024, according to UI website.

UI’s media relations team was not immediately available for further comment.

Alpha Delta Phi is the first Greek Life organization suspended by UI from Sigma Chi in 2022.

UI provided services to students involved in the event, according to the release. UI encourages anyone with information to contact the UI Police Department.
