BBB experts, law enforcement warn of increasingly compelling vacation scams

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The holiday shopping season is underway. Unfortunately, it’s also scam season.

Experts outline some key things to keep in mind when shopping this holiday season. Better Business Bureau senior director of media relations Jason Meza said it’s a good idea to be proactive.

1) Be aware of gift card scams, which occur when people buy a gift card without knowing it’s compromised. These scams mainly happen online and steal information and card numbers.

2) The BBB says it’s important to buy from reputable sites. Watch out for misspellings and misspellings. Scammers have managed to almost completely clone websites that steal your information and money.

3) Social media scams can be disguised as pay-it-forward campaigns. Some in the past have been called “Secret Sister” or “Secret Santa Dog”.

“If you lose money up to a certain amount, it’s already a tough business, but people are subject to identity theft, and this is a much bigger business that takes an average of 3-4 years to clean up,” Meza said.

In addition to online scams, police say it’s important to protect your belongings in your home and vehicle.

According to figures from the Bryan Police Department (BPD), from Oct-Dec 2023, there were 78 reports of motor vehicle theft in Bryan alone, compared to Oct-Nov 15, 2024 with 41 reports so far.

“Please lock your vehicle doors and when you shop, put them in the trunk under the seat cover,” said Officer Seth Waller of the BPD.

Waller wants to remind everyone of the important rule that can save you a lot of hassle and money this holiday season.

“Close, hide, take,” added Waller.
