Phoenix police arrested a man Friday morning in connection with a murder case that went cold after the suspect fled the country nearly 22 years ago.

Hector Bautista, 42, now faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the Jan. 11, 2003, shooting death of Anton Charles Matous, 57, according to police. Bautista is also charged with felony armed robbery.

According to police, Anton Charles Matous died at a hospital from a gunshot wound after officers responded to a report of shots fired near 41st Street and McDowell Road. Detectives discovered that Matous had been shot during an attempted robbery by Hector Bautista and another individual. Bautista was identified by authorities through a series of photographs, but fled the country shortly after the incident.

Police said both local and federal authorities had been working to bring Bautista to justice since 2003, eventually succeeding with assistance from the US Marshals Service.

In a statement, Phoenix Police Detective Dominick Roestenberg said, “The Phoenix Police Department, the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service worked tirelessly to get justice for Anton and his family.”

The Arizona Republic published an article four days after the 2003 shooting that said Matous was shot in a trailer park by two men who were looking for his gun. A few days later, 21-year-old Ernesto Guadalupe Acosta was arrested in the shooting, The Republic reported.

Acosta was convicted of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted robbery in October 2003 and is serving 25 years to life, according to Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry records.
