The paralyzed high school football player makes an emotional comeback on senior night

BREMEN, Georgia (WANF/Gray News ) – A Georgia high school football player surprised his teammates and coaches with a visit on senior night weeks after suffering a serious injury.

Bremen High School quarterback Carson Kimball joined his team for Friday night’s game.

“As soon as I saw the Bremen exit sign, I burst into tears,” he said. “It was exciting to drive back through the place I’ve driven so many times.”

About eight weeks ago, Kimball was tackled during a home game against Bowdon High. The blow left the defender without any sensation below the waist.

He was taken off the field and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

High school senior underwent spine surgery and spent nearly two weeks recovering in the hospital.

Paralyzed from the chest down, the 18-year-old lives and rehabilitates at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

Kimball he worked hard to build back mobility in arms and shoulders.

“It was definitely a battle,” he said. “I never would have imagined 56 days ago that I would be here at this moment.”

Friday marked Kimball’s first time back in Bremen since his injury in August.

Bremen High School head football coach Davis Russell had no idea his captain made a triumphant return Friday night.

“The leader of our team is back, Carson is the heart and soul of the whole town,” he said. “It’s incredible to have him back.”

Despite a long road to recovery, Kimball hopes his presence has inspired others to never give up.

“I will try my best to help others realize that there is a lot going on in life, but there is also a lot to be thankful for,” he said.

Caron Kimball’s father, Randy Kimball, said his son has already reduced his timeline to walk again from two years to six months.

“It’s everything for Carson to be able to come here tonight,” he said. “This community has helped us a lot and helped us as a family.”

More than $65,000 has been raised for the family as Carson Kimball continues his rehab at the Shepherd Center.
