FREEHOLD – An Asbury Park man has been sentenced to life in prison for a 2022 slaying that occurred after the attacker and victim were gambling.

Jaszhark A. Rogers, 38, was convicted of 1st degree murder, 1st degree felony murder, 1st degree armed robbery, 1st degree conspiracy to commit robbery, along with three felony weapons charges II. He was sentenced to life in prison plus two consecutive 18-year terms for the armed robbery and weapons charges, along with a consecutive 10-year term for the Certain persons not to possess weapons charge.

The victim was Yahnie Patterson, 26, of Lakewood, who was found critically injured in the early morning hours of June 18, 2022, on a street in Asbury Park. He succumbed to his injuries three days later.

Police learned that Rogers and Shakri A. Prince, 31, also of Asbury Park, intended to rob Patterson of cash and property after a several-hour dice game. Rogers kicked him out of an alley where the game was being played. Prince grabbed Patterson and hit him in the skull with a gun. Rogers then kicked and stomped on Patterson’s head and neck as he lay in the street.

Erikah E. Handy, 24, of Neptune Township, and Tyonna N. Henderson, 34, of Asbury Park, were arrested in connection with the Patterson robbery and helped Rogers and Prince flee the scene.

Prince has already pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. Handy pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree theft and Henderson pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree tampering with evidence.
