Warren says she supports Sanders’ bid to block Israel arms deal

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) is supporting a proposal by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) to block a massive arms transfer to Israel by the Biden administration, citing violations of US law in supporting Israel’s attack on Gaza.

Warren said in a statement on Thursday that he supports a joint resolution of disapproval brought by Sanders to block arms sales to Israel. Such resolutions allow Congress to block a foreign arms deal initiated by the executive branch.

The Massachusetts senator specifically cited the Biden administration’s refusal this week keeps his own commitment last month to withhold Israel’s weapons if it did not comply with a US request to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza within 30 days. On Tuesday, at the end of the 30-day period, the administration said it had not assessed that Israel was in violation of US law, despite Israel not only not complying but worsening the aid freeze in recent weeks.

“Thirty days later, the Biden administration has acknowledged that Israel’s actions have not significantly expanded food, water and basic needs to desperate Palestinian civilians,” Warren said in a statement. “Despite (Israeli Prime Minister) Netanyahu’s failure to meet US demands, the Biden administration has taken no action to restrict the flow of offensive weapons.”

“The failure of the Biden administration to comply with US law and suspend arms shipments is a serious mistake that undermines American credibility around the world. If this administration will not act, Congress must step up to enforce US law and hold the Netanyahu government accountable through a joint resolution of disapproval,” the senator continued.

Sanders announced on Wednesday that it will introduce its joint resolutions of disapproval aimed at blocking $20 billion of the Biden administration’s planned arms transfers Israel, for a vote in the Senate next week.

Warren did not specify which resolutions of disapproval she supports. Lawmakers often specify that they oppose transfers of “offensive” weapons to Israel but support “defensive” weapons — though advocates have long argued that there is no practical difference when “defensive” weapons, such as supplies for Israel’s Iron Dome , gives Israel a leeway. to attack countries without fear of being harmed by retaliation.

Sanders gave birth six resolutions in totaleach targeting a different part of the sale. Several of them, targeting tank rounds, JDAMs, JDAM receivers and mortar rounds, were co-introduced by Sens. Peter Welch (D-Vermont) and Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), but Sanders was the only one to introduce most of the sale. , involving $18.8 billion worth of fighter jets and upgrades to Israel’s F-15 arsenal. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) has joined the resolution regarding blocking the transfer of tank turns.

“There is no longer any doubt that Netanyahu’s extremist government is in clear violation of US and international law as it wages a barbaric war against the Palestinian people of Gaza,” Sanders said. “The United States cannot continue to be complicit in this war by providing more military aid and weaponry to the Netanyahu government. Congress must act to block these arms sales.”

Sanders says the sales would violate the Foreign Assistance Act, which specifies that the U.S. must not send weapons to entities that impede the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid. expert, lawyer and MPs have repeatedly said the administration is violating international and domestic law in sending weapons to Israel, but U.S. officials they lied instead about and provided cover for Israel’s genocidal slaughter to continue feeding the weapons pipeline.

Stopping the flow of arms to Israel from the US, Israel’s main foreign military backer, is one of the only ways to end the genocide in Gaza and Israel’s aggression in Lebanon and beyond, advocates have long argued.

Warren’s statement came after a group of 95 organizations in Massachusetts sent a letter Warren and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) asking them to vote for the resolutions.

“The resolutions would block the transfer of the types of weapons that Israel has used in attacks that have killed thousands of civilians, including aid workers and journalists, in Gaza over the past year,” the letter said.

Similarly, on Wednesday, a group of 95 from New York organizations wrote a letter New York Senators Kristen Gillibrand (D) and Chuck Schumer (D) urging them to support Sanders’ effort. The letter campaign was led by state chapters of the Iranian American National Council.

Truthout is preparing to meet Trump’s agenda with resistance at every turn

Dear truth Community,

If you’re feeling anger, discouragement, confusion, and deep fear today, you’re not alone. We feel it too. We are sick at heart. In the face of Trump’s fascist agenda, we are desperately concerned about the most vulnerable among us, including our loved ones and everyone in truth community, and our minds are racing a million miles a minute to try to work out everything that needs to be done.

We need to give ourselves space to grieve and feel our fear, feel our anger, and keep at the forefront of our minds the harsh truth that millions of real human lives are at stake. And at the same time, we must get down to business, take stock of our resources, and prepare to plunge headlong into the movement.

Journalism is a linchpin of this movement. Even as we reel, we muster all the energy we can to face what lies ahead, because we know that one of the sharpest weapons against fascism is the publication of the truth.

There are many terrifying planks on Trump’s agenda, and we plan to devote ourselves to reporting each one in detail and, most importantly, covering the movements that resist them. We also recognize that Trump is a dire threat to journalism itself, and that we must take this seriously from the start.

Last week, the four of us sat down to have some tough but necessary conversations about truth under the Trump presidency. How would we defend our publication from a barrage of far-right lawsuits seeking to bankrupt us? How would we keep our reporters safe if they have to cover outbreaks of political violence or are targeted by the authorities? How will we urgently produce the hands-on analysis, tools and movement coverage you need right now – going beyond our normal routines to meet a terrifying moment in ways that are best for you?

It will be a tough and scary time to produce social justice journalism. We need to deliver news, strategy, liberating ideas, tools and solutions that spark movement with a force we’ve never had to do before. And at the same time, we desperately need to protect our ability to do so.

We know this is such a painful time and donations might understandably be the last thing on your mind. But we must ask for your support, which is needed in a new and urgent way.

We promise to go the extra mile to bring you real news that prevents misinformation and vitriol, hate and violence. We promise to publish analysis that will serve the needs of the movements we all rely on to survive the next four years and even build for the future. We promise to be responsive, to recognize you as members of our community with a vital stake and a voice in this work.

Please dig deep if you can, but a donation of any amount will be a truly meaningful and tangible action at this cataclysmic moment in history. We are currently looking for 350 new monthly donors over the next 6 days.

We are with you. Let’s do everything we can to move forward together.

With love, anger and solidarity,

Maya, Negin, Saima and Ziggy
