Holiday help needed at local food banks

COLORADO SPRINGS — The holiday season is already underway for emergency food providers in southern Colorado.

“We have a big event – Take a Turkey to Work Day next week, we’ll be collecting around 3000 turkeys from the community. We will probably distribute about 7,000 turkeys, said Care and Share Food Bank President and CEO Nate Springer.

At the Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs, donations received now will roll through Thanksgiving, the rest of the holiday season and the first quarter of next year.

Inflation continues to run its course, and many face a daily need for food beyond the extras provided for Thanksgiving and other holidays.

“There are so many people living on the brink and living paycheck to paycheck and then something changes. Gas prices are going up, rent is going up, utilities are going up, and they have to find a way to pay those fixed costs in their lives,” Springer said.

The holidays are important to counter the growing demand for food aid.

Springer said, “What grows is the kindness and generosity of people. People really start thinking about others when it’s the holidays. Because I believe food is what brings people together.”

Care and Share is a resource that complements nearly 300 food banks in 29 counties in southern Colorado.
