Teen arrested two years after raping robbery victim he followed at Miami-Dade home

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 45-year-old woman told Miami-Dade detectives that she was right outside her home when a teenager suddenly punched her in the head and face with a closed fist and yelled, “Money! Money!”

According to a police report, the woman said she showed her purse, so he grabbed her, took her money and cell phone and pushed and punched her to remove her clothes and rape her.

More than two years after the murder, the police arrested Donovan Stokes. Detectives believe he stalked the woman on March 25, 2022, as she walked home after buying groceries.

The woman reported that Stokes, then 17, had taken off her underwear to clean herself, so detectives reported finding a condom with DNA evidence in a trash can in her backyard.

According to a Miami-Dade police report, on Oct. 17, the woman recognized Stokes as “someone with whom she had never had consensual sexual contact.”

Detectives arrested Stokes — who turned 20 in April and lives in the Pinewood neighborhood — on Oct. 24.

They questioned him at the special victims office in Doral and arrested him after he admitted the facts of the case that police withheld to protect the victim.

Miami-Dade correctional officers booked Stokes Thursday afternoon, and he was at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Friday.

Court records show Stokes faces four felony charges: two counts of sexual assault, one count of armed robbery and one count of burglary/assault/battery. His arraignment is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 18 before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Richard Hersch.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
