North Dakota Approves Summit Carbon Solutions Pipeline Permit

NORTH DAKOTA (Dakota News Now) – The North Dakota Public Service Commission has unanimously approved a route permit for the Summit Carbon Solution pipeline project.

Summit Carbon Solutions plans to develop a carbon pipeline that would cross five states, including 18 South Dakota counties, to transport carbon dioxide captured from ethanol plants to an underground storage site west of Bismark, North Dakota .

The commission denied Summit a permit in 2023, but the company made changes to the route and reapplied. Summit says it incorporated feedback from landowners and community leaders into the changes.

Summit has obtained a route permit in Iowa, but cannot begin construction in Iowa until it obtains permits in North Dakota and South Dakota.

Last year, the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission denied Summit Carbon Solutions’ request. The company said it plans to reapply on Nov. 19.
