Troy University is expanding its degree offerings with the addition of a new Ph.D. program, a new Ph.D. concentration and a new master’s program, the university announced Thursday.

The three new degree options include a Ph.D. in Criminology, a Master of Business Administration-Data Analytics and a concentration in Global Health Leadership in the Ph.D. program.

“Troy University’s introduction of degree programs in healthcare leadership, data analytics and criminology directly addresses our state’s evolving workforce needs,” said Dr. Kerry Palmer, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. “These strategic additions to our academic portfolio reflect our commitment to preparing graduates for high-demand careers serving Alabama communities. By equipping our students with specialized skills in healthcare management, data-driven decision making and criminal justice, we are investing in both their future success and the well-being of all Alabamians.”

The programs will launch in 2025 and aim to offer students more variety in program options, said Mary Anne Templeton, dean of the Graduate School and associate provost.

“We are expanding our master’s and doctoral programs to give more students greater opportunities to expand their knowledge,” she said. “In doing so, we aim to strengthen the workforce with highly skilled professionals who can meet the needs of businesses in high-demand sectors, while also advancing research in those areas.”

The program aims to teach candidates about the root causes of crime, how to critically evaluate theoretical perspectives and how to apply practical approaches to crime.

“Our program is designed to help students achieve their professional goals, such as teaching in higher education institutions and career advancement,” said Dr. Halil Akbas, Associate Professor and Graduate Director. “Faculty members will help students develop strong research and statistical skills as well as theoretical knowledge. With the in-depth knowledge they gain, they will be equipped to tackle complex crime and justice issues and conduct criminology research that contributes to positive change in the field.”

The PhD in Global Leadership is a 63-hour curriculum with 45 hours dedicated to core classes, research, and dissertation. After completing the core courses, students will take specialized global health leadership courses. Coursework for the health major includes health policy and policy, principles of epidemiology, global leadership innovation, and a global leadership seminar.

“The need for leaders in global healthcare has never been more critical,” said Dr. Pamela Lemoine, Program Liaison and Leadership Professor. “With a Ph.D. in Global Leadership and a specialization in Global Healthcare Leadership, graduates will possess the advanced and in-depth knowledge and skills necessary to identify and respond to the situations that challenge the infrastructure of the healthcare industry, as well as the communities in which we live and work. .”
