Hurricane Milton floods persist in Volusia County: ‘We’re literally on life support’

Five weeks after Hurricane Milton flooded parts of Central Florida, areas of Volusia County remain under water, leaving residents frustrated and homes unlivable.

In Orange City, Miller Road was submerged for two weeks, cutting off residents’ only way in and out until Florida Department of Transportation crews built a temporary road. While the road is now accessible, floodwaters are still not receding, standing water still surrounds homes and submerges septic systems.

MORE STORIES:

“We’re literally on life support,” said Reese Linton, a resident whose five-acre property is now mostly underwater, with floodwaters just steps from his home. “Thirty-five days after the storm – the water should recede. It rained very little.”

Other residents, like Lenny Gabella, faced costly measures to protect their homes. Gabella evacuated for a month and recently returned to find her septic tank still submerged, making the water unsafe.

St. River Water Management District. Johns says Miller Lake remains particularly vulnerable because of its bowl-like terrain, which traps floodwater without any natural outlet.
