Latest Ukraine War: Russia ‘Strongly Signals’ Ukraine Plan As Trump Becomes President | World News

That’s all our coverage of the war in Ukraine for now – but we’ll be back tomorrow with all the latest.

Here’s a rundown of today’s headlines before we go:

Moscow is signaling Putin’s intentions for Ukraine when Trump takes over, analysts say

Experts at the Institute for the Study of War said there were signs the Kremlin was now trying to dictate the terms of possible “peace” talks with Ukraine ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration in the US.

“The way the Kremlin is trying to set its terms for negotiations strongly signals that Russia’s goals remain unchanged and still amounts to a full surrender of Ukraine,” the group’s analysts said.

“The Kremlin appears no more willing to make concessions to the incoming Trump administration than it has been to the current administration.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed yesterday that the start of Trump’s presidency will not fundamentally change the US position towards Ukraine.

Russian forces are pushing into the outskirts of the northeastern city, Ukrainian officials say

Ukrainian officials said a Russian assault group briefly penetrated the outskirts of Kupiansk for the first time since Moscow’s forces fled the area in 2022.

“They partially entered the suburbs, the industrial area and were destroyed by our troops… There were assault actions using heavy armored vehicles, there were attempts to bring in infantry,” said the head of the city’s military administration.

The town, now just 2.5 miles from the front line, is under constant shelling and the population has dwindled to 3,000 people who are being urged to evacuate, official Andriy Besedin said.
