Trump picks RFK Jr. to lead Health and Human Services

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The cabinet position oversees US government health agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies responsible for family health, Medicare and Medicaid.

Trump has signaled for weeks that Kennedy could fill a top health care post in his administration.

“He knows that better than anybody,” Trump told reporters of Kennedy on the campaign trail. “He happens to have opinions that I strongly agree with and have held for a long time.”

At a campaign rally, Trump said of Kennedy: “I’m going to let him run wild on health, I’m going to let him run wild on food, I’m going to let him run wild on medicine.” .

Kennedy supported the debunked claims that vaccines cause autism and wrote a book accusing former NIH director Anthony Fauci of controlling the media and government health funding to influence scientific research.

He is the founder of Children’s Health Defense, a nonprofit group that advocates against the use of vaccines.

Kennedy ran as an independent for the 2024 presidential nomination and later ended his run to endorse Trump in a deal in which he expected to be given a role overseeing health care policy.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, posted X in support of the nomination, specifically agreeing with some of Kennedy’s views on drug prices and pesticide use.

Kennedy’s nomination is subject to Senate approval.
