Armed robbers killed in shootout with police on R59 in Alberton

Four armed robbers were killed in a shootout with the police.

It is understood the fight took place on the R59 in Alberton on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the provincial police commissioner, was addressing the media at the scene of the crime.

Mthombeni said the suspects were about to commit a business robbery in the area and were killed during a confrontation with the police.

“The suspects were about to rob businesses around here. While the police were chasing them and trying to stop them. When they tried to stop them, they started shooting at the police. The police retaliated and during this process, four suspects died on the spot.”

Mthombeni said police were examining the scene as investigations continued.

Earlier this week, seven suspects were arrested by the police and private security shortly after they robbed a jewelry store in Clearwater Mall, Roodepoort.

KZN fire strike

The fighting comes a day after two suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder and robbery were killed in a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The criminals are understood to have been fatally wounded during a clash with police in the Namibian area of ​​Inanda in the early hours of Friday.

Fighting with weapons

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said members of the crime squad acted on information about the suspects’ hideout.

“After posing as police officers, the suspects opened fire and in an inevitable self-defense shootout, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded.

“The two cases of house robbery, a robbery with a firearm and the attempted murder cases were committed in Inanda area this month (October 2024), while the murder case was committed in June 2024,” he Netshiunda said.
