Two Minnesota family members were killed when their SUV hit a semi-trailer truck that was partially stopped in the traffic lane along the Kansas Turnpike and then hit another semi-trailer that was stopped.

The crash happened around 4:10 a.m. Monday on northbound Interstate 35 near Wichita, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Thomas Reller, 78, and Octavia Reller, 27, were killed in the crash, according to the patrol. Both were from Zumbrota.

A semi was “partially in the roadway from a previous crash” when the Minnesota SUV hit the big rig and then another semi that was involved in the previous crash, the patrol said in a statement.

The two semi drivers came away with minor injuries, the patrol said.
