When will Hattiesburg test fire hydrants in 2024?

HATTIESBURG, Miss (WHLT) – The Hattiesburg Fire Department will begin its annual fire hydrant testing program on Monday, November 18th.

“Hydrant testing is an essential part of maintaining fire preparedness and ensuring public safety,” said Hattiesburg Fire Chief Sherrocko Stewart. “Our crews will follow a detailed schedule covering assigned areas each week until all hydrants have been tested.”

Each fire station is assigned specific blocks of hydrants to test throughout the city. A weekly schedule will be made public and crews will continue to work through the assigned areas until testing is complete.

According to officials, the testing evaluates the pressure and flow rate of each hydrant within Hattiesburg city limits to meet state standards for fire protection and helps maintain the department’s Class 3 fire rating.

Residents in these areas may experience blocked roads or traffic detours during this time, as well as low water pressure or discolored water. Officials said these are typical side effects of hydrants being washed away during testing. Residents experiencing loss of service, low pressure or discolored water for an extended period of time should call 601-545-4500.

There will be a weekly updated schedule of test sites (published every Friday). available online and on the Facebook pages of the City Hall and the Fire Department.

The schedule may change depending on the volume of emergency calls and the weather.
