Prosecutor Pamela Price to speak after recall, announce charges against deputies in Santa Rita jail death

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price holds a news conference Thursday, her first public appearance since being recalled last week.

Price plans to discuss the criminal charges he filed this week against nine deputies and two paramedics in the Nov. 15, 2021, death of Maurice Monk, who had been languishing in his Santa Rita jail cell for days before anyone noticed that he was no longer alive. .

Price has the conference at 1 p.m

None of the 11 people have yet been charged; she has not yet been scheduled a court date.

Monk’s sister, Elvira Monk, told KTVU that she was invited to the press conference around 10:30 a.m. and was told by prosecutors that arrest warrants were still being served for the deputies and staff and that “things I’m doing well”.

Charging documents filed Tuesday in Alameda County Superior Court list the charges against Deputies Donall Chauncy Rowe, Thomas Mowrer, Ross Burruel, Robinderpal Singh Hayer, Andre Gaston, Troy Hershel White, Syear Osmani, Mateusz Laszuk and Christopher Handel, as well as Wellpath Nurse David Everett Donoho and Dr. Neal Edwards was charged with abuse and neglect of dependent adults.

Mower and White are no longer with the sheriff’s office.

Hayer, White and Osmani were also charged with falsifying documents.

All charges are felonies.

The seven deputies still working for the Sheriff’s Office were placed on leave after charges were formally filed.

In an email to KTVU. Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez acknowledged mistakes were made in Monk’s death, but she doesn’t believe criminal charges are warranted.

She added that she was “deeply disappointed by Prosecutor Price’s decision to pursue charges because I do not believe they are warranted. I will continue to support our staff throughout this challenging process.”

Wellpath officials chose not to comment.

Nia’ More Monk is the daughter of Maurice Monk, who languished for days at Santa Rita Prison.

KTVU attempted to reach Sgt. Shaughn Park, president of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Association, but no one picked up the phone.

KTVU first reported the conditions last fall Monk’s death after getting exclusive body cam video inside the jail that shows no one has physically checked on the 45-year-old man, who is seen lying half-naked on his bed for at least three days, possibly four.

And when deputies finally found Monk’s body, stacks of uneaten food trays and pills lay strewn across the floor next to an elongated pool of urine at the foot of his bed.

Monk had been there so long that the ink print of his prison shirt had stained his chest. Stacks of uneaten food trays and pills lay strewn across the floor.

An internal sheriff’s investigation found that some deputies falsified medical check deadlines and failed to spot numerous signs that Monk was in medical distress, according to Monk’s wrongful-death lawsuit.

Last year, Monk’s daughter and son won 7 million dollars – an unprecedented amount from the sheriff’s office.

It’s unclear how the charges will proceed now that Price has been recalled.

No one knows who will replace her permanently and whether that person will want to continue with the case.
