Additional officers at Euclid Middle School to keep the drop off safe

EUCLID, Ohio (WOIO) – Extra police officers were at Euclid Middle School every morning this week to help keep students safe during the busy dismissal time.

“We’re just trying to give a little bit of support to the school to make sure,” said Officer George Panagiotou of the Euclid Police Department. “They have a very difficult job and our priority is keeping our children safe.”

Police are gently reminding parents who are still getting used to the new shuttle that takes cars through the middle school parking lot, replacing a chaotic drop off on Tracy Avenue near East 222nd Street.

“Many parents have left Tracy, despite repeated requests,” said Mike Mennel, director of school leadership at Euclid Middle School. “Now, with the help of the police department and our new flow and signage, it’s much better.”

The district moved about 900 middle school students to the new campus off Tracy Avenue several years ago, and it took some time to get the departure plan right.

“Leaving them here is simple, there’s a lot of room,” said Robyn Payne, mother of an eighth-grader. “The traffic is going, it’s going steadily, and it’s definitely a better process.”

“You don’t believe the traffic on Tracy from dropping off kids because Tracy is a small street,” said Kandace Jones, who drops off two high schoolers and a middle schooler.

“We were able to keep traffic moving in the right direction and our priority is keeping the kids safe,” Mennel said.

Police are asking families to follow the simple procedure so no one else gets hurt.

“Think the big picture and be part of the solution,” Euclid police posted on Facebook.
