What the College Football Playoff Committee had to say about Boise State falling to No. 13

This past weekend, Boise State football had a closer result than many expected. The Broncos defeated a three-game Nevada team 28-21improving to 8-1 on the season.

After the close win, the Broncos were once again included in Tuesday’s latest College Football Playoff rankings. However, they fell one spot from #12 to #13.

In a conference call after the rankings were revealed, Michigan athletic director and CFP selection committee chairman Warde Manuel commented: G5 Football Daily on Boise State’s latest performance and where they landed in this week’s rankings.

“Well, you know, obviously they won against Nevada and had a great season. I think when you look at it in relation to where they fell, it’s more about how the teams that were above them played. .”

As Manuel noted, the committee did not attribute Boise State’s slight drop to its own performance, but saw fit to rank other teams above them because of the magnitude of those results—specifically, Ole Miss’ upset of Georgia. Ole Miss was previously No. 16, but was moved to No. 11. Georgia was previously No. 3, but dropped to No. 12.

“It wasn’t that Boise State didn’t have a good win. It was more around looking at how everything fell, where the teams in front of them were and who slid in different directions, and then obviously Ole Miss had great win vs. Georgia and moved ahead of Boise State based on committee evaluation.”

Even at No. 13, Boise State would make the playoffs given they win the Mountain West Conference championship. The highest ranked G5 conference champion will automatically be ranked #12 if ranked outside the top 12.

The Broncos return to action this week against San Jose State on CBS Sports Network at 4 PM PST, 5 PM MT.
