Long Island firefighter arrested in Medford brush fire – NBC New York

A Long Island volunteer firefighter was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly admitted to starting one of the brush fires that tore through the city of Medford earlier in the day, according to a local official.

Investigators battled nearly a half-dozen small brush fires in Medford on Tuesday. They took them out by evening after battling them for about six hours, officials said. No injuries were reported.

According to the Brookhaven Town Supervisor, who saw one of the fires hit his property on Pines Park, the volunteer firefighter is with the Medford Fire Department.

Police identified him as 20-year-old Jonathan Quiles. They allege he intentionally set a fire in a wooded area on Mount Vernon Avenue Tuesday afternoon; a car parked nearby was damaged. Prosecutors accused him of setting cotton balls on fire and throwing them into the woods and under the car.

Quiles, of Medford, was charged with arson and reckless endangerment. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Central Islip later Wednesday. The judge placed Quiles on supervised release. His lawyer said he would protect his client and fight for him.

Brookhaven plans to press charges, supervisor says. The Medford Fire Department said in a Facebook post that it suspended the volunteer. Added a background check that didn’t raise any red flags.

No other details were immediately available.
