RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County School District is looking to launch a pilot program to test restricting cell phone use.

The program will start in January next year and will be updated with feedback provided in April.

Washoe County School District staff has already sent out a survey to parents, students and teachers. More than 9,700 families provided feedback, along with 345 teachers and 80 students.

59% of families say it is important to be able to contact their children at school via mobile phones, and 31% of students receive more than 10 text messages during school hours. The survey also found that 97% of teachers and 69% of families believe that mobile phones negatively affect student behavior in schools.

Meanwhile, 95% of teachers and 79% of families believe that cell phones are a major distraction for students in the classroom.

43% of students believe that cell phone use should be at the teacher’s discretion, 30% of families believe that cell phones should be kept in backpacks or pockets, and 25% of students are in favor of cell phones being in a basket trash or in the bag. to 33% of teachers. 25% of teachers would favor keeping them in a closet.
