Scotland’s Scott Cummings has been banned for a week after the TMO upheld the red card

Scotland block Scott Cummings has been suspended for one match after a foul on Franco Mostert during Scotland’s 32-15 loss to South Africa. Cummings was initially shown a yellow card for the foul. However, after a review by the TMO, the yellow card was converted to a red card, leaving the Scottish team with just fourteen players for the rest of the match.

Cummings and Darge initially attempted to tackle Mostert, but Cummings inadvertently fell on Mostert’s leg, which posed a significant risk of injury. Although the foul was initially deemed worthy of only a yellow card, a replay review resulted in a red card decision for foul play as it breached World Rugby’s law against targeting the lower limbs.

“Scotland number five Scott Cummings appeared before an independent disciplinary panel via video link after receiving a 20-minute red card for a foul play contrary to Law 9.20(e) in the match between Scotland and South Africa from Sunday 10,” said. the disciplinary committee.

Cummings pleaded guilty during the disciplinary hearing but denied any intent behind his actions. The independent committee initially set a two-week suspension, but after considering his disciplinary record reduced it to one week.

As a result of this ban, Cummings will be unavailable for Scotland’s friendly against Portugal on 16 November 2024. The initial yellow card was turned into a red card in a controversial incident which attracted criticism on social media, with some claiming it was unintentionally cynical.

Some fans speculated that the incident resembled a “croc-roll”, a recently banned rugby technique. Ultimately, officials concluded that Cummings’ contact with Mostert’s leg was indeed risky.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend acknowledged the missed opportunities and unfortunate circumstances that hampered their chances of victory and expressed his frustration at the red card incident that marred their game.

After the game, Townsend thanked the team but stressed the importance of capitalizing on chances. On the other hand, Cummings could find some relief when his suspension coincides with Scotland’s friendly against Portugal, amid growing concerns about the need for improved policies to help officials spot dangerous play during the break.
