Man Sentenced to 20 Years in NKY Burglary While Awaiting Trial in Deputy’s Death

FORT MITCHELL, Ky. (WKRC) – A man accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy in Kentucky has received the maximum sentence for a separate crime committed just days before the fatal incident.

The Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said a judge sentenced Steven Sheangshang to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery and being a persistent offender. Sheangshang was accused of stealing a portable generator from a home on Fortside Drive in May last year.

Just five days after the break-in, Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley was shot and killed during a traffic stop on I-75 just outside of Lexington. Investigators said Sheangshang drove away after shooting the deputy, then shot another man and stole his vehicle.

After Sheangshang’s arrest in the deputy’s death, investigators identified him as the same person caught on security camera footage stealing the generator.

Sheangshang is currently awaiting trial in connection with Deputy Conley’s death, and his attorneys recently requested that the trial be moved out of Scott County.
