Sunny skies and above average temperatures on Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Good morning and happy Saturday! We end the week with very warm temperatures. Anniston and Tuscaloosa broke their records on October 25th. Birmingham was one degree shy of equaling the old record. We could be close to hitting record high temperatures this afternoon, but we’ll likely be a few degrees away from breaking them. We start the morning with temperatures between 50 and a half degrees. You may need a light jacket if you plan to be outside this morning. The first AccuTrack Satellite and Radar alert shows us clear and dry. We are tracking a cold front to our north that is forecast to move through Alabama later today. Ahead of the front, we will likely see another afternoon of well above average temperatures. If you’re planning on attending the Magic City Classic parade this morning, the weather is looking great, with temperatures in the 60s during the parade at 8am CDT. Temperatures should warm up quickly late this morning, with most of us in the mid to upper 70s by 10-11am CDT. We will likely see mostly sunny skies this afternoon. A cold front will push through Alabama this afternoon and evening. Ahead of the front, temperatures will likely warm into the mid-80s, with a few spots south of I-20 in the upper 80s. Winds will likely be out of the northwest at 5-10 mph. We could see gusts up to 15-20 mph. The weather is looking great if you plan to attend the Magic City Classic game or attend Alabama’s homecoming game this afternoon. Just make sure you take your hat and sunglasses. If you have evening plans, we should stay dry with mostly clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to cool to the mid 70s by 7pm CDT.

Isolated shower possible on Sunday: We will likely start Sunday partly cloudy with temperatures in the upper 50s. There’s a small chance we’ll see a few showers Sunday afternoon, but I think most of us will be out of the rain. If you see a few drops tomorrow, consider yourself lucky! The best chance for a stray shower will be Sunday evening in eastern Alabama. We haven’t had any rain for most of the month. If we don’t see any rain tomorrow in Birmingham or Anniston, we’ll likely have the driest October on record for both cities. Most of us will likely arrive partly cloudy and dry with highs nearing 80°F. Upper 70s will likely be if you live north of I-20. Temperatures could warm briefly into the 80s south of I-20 Sunday afternoon. Winds should be out of the north tomorrow at 5-10 mph.

Dry conditions continue next week: I don’t see any sign of rain until Wednesday next week. Temperatures should get a little cooler, but we’ll stay above average. The average high temperature for late October is in the 70s. I think we’ll stay a few degrees above average with highs in the lower 80s next week. Overnight lows will also remain mild and above average with temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

Next important thing: Long-range models suggest a cold front could approach Alabama by next Thursday and Friday. There’s a chance we’ll see a few showers in northwest Alabama during Halloween evening. Confidence in our rain chances remains low at this time. I would probably plan for a mostly dry Halloween with highs in the 80s with mostly cloudy skies. Thursday night temperatures will likely stay in the 70s for trick-or-treaters. We could see a few showers along and north of I-20/59 Friday afternoon. We increased the chance of rain to 20% with highs in the upper 70s. The mild weather pattern is likely to continue into the first weekend of November. I don’t see any sign of significant precipitation or cooler temperatures over the next seven days.

Tropical Update: The good news is that the Atlantic remains calm. We are not watching any areas for possible development in the next seven days. I think we will have to monitor the Caribbean until next weekend for a slim chance of anything developing in that region. Confidence remains low in whatever is formed. Hurricane season continues through November. Normally, it’s very rare for anything tropical to hit the Southeast in November. Cold fronts and high pressure areas normally divert tropical systems away from us.
