NBA legend George Karl says the league should learn a lesson from Trump’s election victory

Legendary NBA head coach George Karl asked the league to take a page from last week’s election results, in which President-elect Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris.

Karl wrote on X Monday that while American voters were looking for a change in his leadership in the White House and in Congress, NBA they should start weighing the changes they need to make when it comes to the product on the field.

“Feelings about Trump aside, last week’s election was a statement of change,” he posted. “The league that I love and that I helped build, the NBA, has to recognize the same thing.

“Fans tell me every day that the games are unwatchable. Entertainment has overtaken sports. The NBA should listen and respond.”

Karl’s complaint about the league was one the league had been dealing with for several years. Dealing with injuries, players resting during hitters or deciding to sit out the long stretch of the regular season, was the antithesis of what fans saw in the 1980s and 1990s.

The NBA has tried to rein in some of its stars with rules on how end-of-season awards are given out.

A player must play in at least 65 games to be considered for the MVP and All-NBA teams. Essentially, it will affect the bottom line of players as they may be eligible for supermax contracts if they win certain prizes.

noted ESPN in January, 1980s All-Star players missed an average of 10.4 games per season, and 1990s All-Star players missed an average of 10.6 games per season. That number rose to an average of 23.9 games missed per season this decade.

The NBA said in a report that managing injuries does not necessarily reduce the risk of long-term injuries.

The league and its players will have to find a solution as the superstar’s power, which would usually bring eyeballs to regular-season games, wanes while the players like LeBron JamesKevin Durant and Steph Curry are entering the twilight of their storied careers.
