Police officer convicted of coercive behavior and control offenses following the trial

A police officer has been convicted of multiple offenses following a five-week trial at Gloucester Crown Court.

PC Mitchell Curtis, 34, was found guilty by jurors of two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour, suffocation with intent and criminal damage.

He has been released on bail and will be sentenced at a date to be confirmed.

The offenses took place in South Gloucestershire and were committed while Curtis was off duty.

The jury was told Curtis was physically, emotionally and verbally abusive to the victim over an 18-month period.

The victim reported the incident to police in October 2022. Curtis was arrested the same day and suspended pending a criminal investigation.

Our Professional Standards Department conducted a parallel investigation into Curtis. Due to the seriousness of his crimes, the criminal process took precedence, and the misdemeanor proceedings now follow.

Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall said: “We would like to publicly acknowledge the bravery shown by the victim in this case, firstly in reporting the horrific ordeal Curtis put her through, but also in supporting the prosecution to enable her to obtain these guilty verdicts. .

“His behavior towards the victim was both abusive and extremely manipulative.

“The seriousness of the offenses committed by Curtis will leave his fellow police officers shocked and horrified and it is right that he has been brought to justice for these horrific crimes.

“During our seven-month investigation a lot of evidence was gathered and yet he still refused to admit what he had done.

“No police officer is above the law. I hope this result reassures any victim of crime that we take these matters incredibly seriously and will always be focused on the perpetrator, no matter who the offender is.

“Misconduct proceedings will now be ongoing against Curtis, where we will seek to ensure that he is banned from working for the police again.”
