Lexington residents are voicing concerns about the safety of pedestrians along the widespread road

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Lexington Police are investigating a deadly collision from Monday evening.

The crash on Winchester Road killed 43-year-old Angelina Wells.

Police say she was struck and killed near the intersection of Winchester Rd. and Ashton Dr. around 6:00 p.m. No charges are expected in that crash.

Winchester Rd. is a stretch near downtown Lexington that has seen its fair share of accidents and fatalities.

“All my life I have lived in this area. I’m 45 years old,” said Adam Kent, who works along Winchester Road. “I’ve traveled the Winchester Road probably as much as anyone in town.”

Kent said over the past decade he has seen more and more foot traffic on Winchester Rd. While driving home Monday night, he said he saw some of the aftermath of one of the stretch’s most recent accidents.

“I can only imagine how the driver felt hitting the person and then I started thinking about the families of both of them and how their lives are being affected,” Kent said.

He said over the years he has considered potential solutions, from installing more crosswalks along the road or requiring pedestrians to wear brighter clothing.

Kent isn’t the only one who has seen how dangerous Winchester Rd is. can get even when an accident is fortunately not a fatal one.

“It was – it was traumatic to look at a human body. It was like watching movies,” said Brian Lundborg, owner of AAMCO Transmissions.

Lundborg said he once saw a woman hit by a vehicle on Winchester Rd.

“(She was) thrown probably 30 or 40 feet, laid in the road for a little while, (the) ambulance hadn’t come and at some point (she) got up and left,” Lundborg said. “You feel for the people who are involved in it. You wonder if anything can be done.”

According to data provided by Lexington Police in October, there were seven pedestrian-involved collisions on Winchester Rd. from January 1 to October 9, which is compared to just two in the entire year of 2023.
