KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A man who was armed with an ax was taken to the hospital after being shot by officers, according to Knoxville police.

The circumstances leading to the shooting are being investigated by agents of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at the request of Knox County District Attorney Charme Allen.

The Knoxville Police Department reported at 1:53 p.m. that an officer involved shooting investigation was underway in the 2600 block of Fairview Street.

KPD said officers initially responded to the area due to a report of a man armed with an axe. Officers encountered the man, and at some point during that encounter, he was shot at least once.

In a news conference around 2:30 p.m., KPD said the situation is believed to have started as a domestic incident.

The man was taken to an area hospital. His condition is unknown.

The shooting scene is about a quarter mile from Belle Morris Elementary School. A Knox County Schools spokesman said the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution due to law enforcement in the area, but the lockdown was lifted before the dismissal.
