Man shot dead by Philadelphia officers after alleged carjacking, pursuit identified

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed by Philadelphia police officers Sunday night after a separate shooting led to a carjacking and chase.

The incident began just after 6 p.m. at a home on the 5400 block of Chancellor Street.

According to Philadelphia Police, officers responded to the scene for reports of a disturbance between a man and a woman.

Upon arrival, the woman — who police believe is the suspect’s girlfriend — told investigators the man fired shots inside the home.

That’s when police say the man, identified as 47-year-old Jonathan Corbin, left the home.

“At some point, an officer from that precinct responded to that location. The male came out of the house and the officer sees the male walking toward a pick-up truck, a black pickup,” explained Assistant Commissioner Frank Vanore of the Chicago Police Department. Philadelphia.

Authorities say Corbin approached the driver of a pickup truck and asked the driver to get out of the car.

Officers allegedly confronted Corbin and fired at least one shot before he fled the scene in the stolen truck.

“This prompted officers to attempt to apprehend the man. There was a pursuit that got here to 52nd and Woodland where the car was stopped,” Vanore said.

Police say Corbin was armed when the car pulled up and he jumped out of the pickup.

Three officers then discharged their weapons. Action News obtained video of the moments leading up to the shooting.

In the video, viewers can see a crowd of people running as police cars come into view. Then shots ring out as the suspect gets out of the vehicle and turns a corner into an empty lot.

“He had a firearm, I don’t know all the details of the confrontation. The firearm was still here and the officers fired during the confrontation,” Vanore explained.

Corbin was hit multiple times, according to police. He suffered gunshot wounds to his arm, face and hip.

Police say Corbin was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

It is unclear whether he was shot at the initial scene, after the police chase, or both.

Responding officers were not injured in the incident, authorities say. No other information has been released at this time.

Police say they are still in the early stages of an investigation.

“It’s a lot of work right now. We have to interview the witnesses that are there, we have video to collect. There is a firearm here that needs to be examined,” Vanore said.

As the investigation continues, authorities say the three officers involved in the incident are on administrative duty.

None of their identities have been released, but Philadelphia police say the officers have all been on the force between two and 10 years.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact police.
