Volkswagen recalls more than 100,000 cars due to serious airbag fault: fix as soon as possible

Volkswagen, a major car manufacturer, is RECALLING over 100,000 vehicles due to exploding airbags that could result in serious injury or death, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The driver’s front airbag inflator “may explode” on certain 2017-2019 VW Beetles, Beetle Convertibles, 2012-2014 Passats, 2017 Passat Wagons and 2006-2007 Passat Sedans.

If the inflator were to explode, the sharp metal fragments could strike the driver or other passengers – resulting in serious injury or death, NHTSA wrote in a statement.

The airbag inflator may explode as a result of long-term exposure to moisture and high temperatures.

Volkswagen is fixing the defect by replacing the driver’s front airbag module free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in late December.
