Schumer invites McCormick to the Senate, while Casey refuses to budge

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) invited a Republican candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate Dave McCormick as a freshman Senate guidance after not extending an invitation due to uncounted ballots in the race.

The Associated Press called the race for McCormick last Thursday, but incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) did DENIED to give up the race. McCormick was spotted on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning, arriving to attend freshman orientation.

One video posted on social media on Tuesday, Casey said: “The American trial was born in Pennsylvania and that trial will continue.”

Schumer’s olive branch to McCormick came with an invitation from Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) to attend the orientation after Associated Press called the race for the Democratic congressman from Arizona on Monday night.

The final call in the race means the new Republican majority will have 53 seats, compared to Schumer’s 47 seats.

“Ruben Gallego and David McCormick were invited to attend the orientation,” a Schumer spokesman told reporters Tuesday.

Schumer previously did not invite McCormick and Gallego to meetings for all new Senate members, stressing over the weekend that about 100,000 ballots need to be counted in the Pennsylvania Senate race.

“As is customary, we will invite the winner once the votes are counted,” Schumer said in a statement Sunday.

Schumer’s decision comes after he faced mounting pressure to invite both McCormick and Gallego to the orientation. Republican senators who opposed Schumer’s decision to block McCormick he had offered himself to escort McCormick to the Capitol.

Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) spoke on social medianoting that she attended her Senate orientation in 2018, although her race at the time had not been called.

“In 2018, my race was not called for 6 days. I jumped on a red eye in DC to do Senate Orientation – I learned so much and made lasting relationships that week. Dave McCormick and Ruben Gallego will be senators for PA and AZ. They should be invited to orientation and start learning the job,” she posted.
