Drivers flee after crash on SB I-65; 1 injured after 3 trucks piled up

An accident on Interstate 65 Tuesday morning blocked lanes of the freeway, causing significant traffic delays to downtown Louisville.

Louisville Metro Police said officers from the Fourth Division responded to a multi-vehicle collision on South I-65 near University Boulevard just after 5:30 am. When officers arrived, they discovered that at least five vehicles had been involved in an accident.

LMPD spokesman Aaron Ellis said the preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed two cars were involved in the initial collision on the freeway, and the drivers in both cars fled the scene. Ellis said one left on foot and the other is believed to have been picked up by another vehicle that was continuing south.

Ellis said three commercial dump trucks traveling south on I-65 approached the initial collision and, with little time to react, created a chain reaction crash. Ellis said a man driving one of the dump trucks was pulled from the vehicle by first responders and taken to U of L Hospital with serious injuries and was rushed into surgery.

The other two drivers were not seriously injured and were checked out by first responders at the scene.

Conformable TRIMARCH, all lanes and the right shoulder of I-65 near the Arthur Street exit are blocked, and they initially predicted a two-hour estimate to clear the scene. Ellis said in an update just before 7:30 a.m. that it would take an “indefinite amount of time” because of a large amount of diesel that needs to be cleaned from the saddle tanks that are breaking on the vehicles.

Southbound lanes of I-65 will remain blocked, and northbound lanes near the crash will also be reduced, Ellis said. Drivers are encouraged to use surface streets and avoid the highway.
