Amir Hossain Amu refused bail in murder case, sent to prison

A Dhaka court today sent former industries minister and Awami League advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu to jail, rejecting his bail plea in a case filed over the death of a trader, Abdul Wadud, in the area Dhaka’s New Market during the quota reform protests in July. 19.

After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the defense pleas and ordered that Amu be sent to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

The detective branch of the police arrested Amu on November 6 from a house in Dhaka’s West Dhanmondi area.

Amu, also the coordinator of the 14-party alliance led by AL, has been elected six times member of parliament from Jhalakathi-2 constituency.

Like many other AL leaders, Amu has been in hiding since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5.

The next day, a joint army and police team recovered Tk 5 million in local and foreign currency from Amu’s house in Jhalakathi after a mob set the house on fire.

The money was discovered when firefighters went there to put out the fire. They notified the army and the police, who then arrived at the scene and found several hidden bags of money.

On August 17, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit instructed all banks to freeze the accounts of Amu and her daughter Sumaiya Hossain.

It also asked banks to block all transactions through the accounts they hold.
