Four airports in central Vietnam will suspend operations on Sunday as Typhoon Trami approaches, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said.

Phu Bai International Airport in Thua Thien-Hue province will cease operations between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., while Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh province, home to the world’s largest cave Son Doong, will close on Sunday between 6 :00 and 19:00.

Da Nang International Airport will remain closed from 6:00 a.m. Sunday until 4:00 a.m. Monday.

Chu Lai Airport in Quang Nam, home of the ancient city of Hoi An, will suspend services from 10:00 a.m. Sunday until 10:00 a.m. Monday.

CAAV said the suspensions are necessary because of the potential threat Typhoon Trami poses to aviation safety. The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation has alerted flights heading to central Vietnam about the closures.

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the typhoon was centered in the northern Paracel Islands, about 440 km away from Da Nang to the east-northeast, with a maximum wind speed of 133 km/h.

It is moving west-southwest at 20 km/h, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

By 13:00 on Sunday, the storm will be located over maritime regions off Vietnam’s central coast, moving south-southwestward before changing track to the east at 5 km/h.

From Saturday night to Monday night, heavy rain is expected in areas from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai, with rain levels reaching 700mm.

The storm wreaked havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 76 and prompting the evacuation of 47,500 residents earlier this week.
