An elderly man was struck and killed while crossing Synott Street on Houston’s west side, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An investigation is underway after Houston police say an elderly man was fatally struck while crossing the street Monday.

According to HPD, the incident happened around 6:00 pm on Synott Street on Houston’s west side.

Investigators say the victim, who was about 90 years old, was crossing the street in a poorly lit area with no crosswalks.

HPD said the driver told them he didn’t see the man until it was too late.

The accident stopped Synott in both directions for several hours. At this time, investigators are not sure if the victim lived nearby or where he was headed.

According to HPD, the driver remained at the scene; he cooperated and showed no signs of intoxication.

“It must be terrible for the family of the person who was hit and for the people who were driving the car. I think there was a passenger there and that passenger has to deal with that trauma as well,” Lt. HPD Larry Crowson said.

As with any fatal accident, police will turn over the findings of the investigation to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and decide if any criminal charges are appropriate.
