Amsterdam riot police make arrests following football violence, World News

AMSTERDAM — Riot police in Amsterdam arrested several people late Monday during another outbreak of violence sparked by a soccer match between Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv and local team Ajax on Thursday (November 7).

A police spokesman said a tram in the ’40-’45 Square in the west of Amsterdam caught fire, possibly caused by fireworks thrown at it. The windows of the tram were broken.

No one was injured in the incident as the tram was empty, the spokesman said.

Footage from local television station AT5 showed many people in the square throwing fireworks, poles and wooden pallets.

Police asked people to stay away from the market and said riot squads would remain present to restore peace.

The riots come after days of unrest in the Dutch capital, where Israeli soccer fans were attacked on Friday morning in what Dutch authorities and a number of foreign leaders denounced as acts of anti-Semitism.

Maccabi fans attacked a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag in Amsterdam on Wednesday. On the day of the match, Maccabi supporters were filmed chanting anti-Arab slogans in videos verified by Reuters.
