RUSKIN, Fla. (WWSB) – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an armed home burglary that left one suspect dead.

The HCSO Communications Center received a call Sunday at approximately 12:23 a.m. reporting that a person had broken into a residence on Double D Ranch Trail in Ruskin.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found the suspect dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Detectives determined that the homeowner’s adult son shot the suspect after he entered the home.

“Imagine the fear of being woken up in the middle of the night by a stranger breaking into your home,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “This is every homeowner’s worst fear, a dangerous and reckless trespasser showing a complete disregard for the safety and security of others. Our thoughts are with this family as they recover from the trauma of this event.”

This is an active investigation.
