Passenger killed, suspected drunk driver injured in Monroe County crash

One person has been pronounced dead and another injured after an alleged drunken driving crash on Route 209 in Chestnuthill Township.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash happened on the night of Saturday, Nov. 9, and officers from the Fern Ridge Barracks were dispatched to the 1600 block of Route 209 at 10:46 p.m.

State police said the vehicle, a Kia Soul, was traveling north on Route 209 at a high rate of speed when it veered off the road and struck a large utility pole. The driver was transported to Lehigh Valley Pocono after suffering serious injuries. They are suspected of driving under the influence.

State police declined to name the driver Monday morning when asked by the Pocono Record.

The passenger, Rebecca Martin, 47, of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, suffered fatal injuries. Not wearing a seat belt. Martin was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m., according to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.

The West End Fire Department and Lehigh Valley EMS assisted at the scene.
